How are thyroid nodules treated?
Most thyroid nodules are benign and do not require treatment. Some nodules need to be monitored, while others require treatment with surgery if the nodule causes symptoms, secretes too much thyroid hormone, or there is concern the nodule is cancerous.
Do thyroid nodules cause symptoms?
People with nodules often have no symptoms at all, but can experience:
- Changes in voice
- Feeling a lump in the neck
- Trouble swallowing
I did not receive a brochure when I had my biopsy. Can I still participate?
People who undergo a fine needle biopsy of a thyroid nodule at a UW Health site and have a benign (non-cancerous) result can participate even if they did not get a brochure as long as they meet all eligibility criteria. The study team will contact you by phone or mail if you are eligible.
How and when will I get paid?
The CHOiCES study team will mail you a check for $40 within a week after you complete the entire study. When participating, you will securely provide your name and address for the study team. We will not keep a record of your personal information.
